Security & Master Key Systems

Master key systems offer control over the movement of people within a building or buildings to provide security and accessibility to the customer for their key holders, tenants or occupiers. Designs can be either on an open section key or on a restricted security key, registered to stop unauthorized duplication of keys. Timpson Locksmiths recommends using restricted security key system as this is more secure.

Timpson Locksmiths fit master key systems to domestic premises, multi tenanted buildings and flats, schools, colleges, universities, health authorities, council and local authorities, retail and offices or any business with multiple sites.

Our Locksmiths can design master keys systems to cylinder operated locks, padlocks, cam and cabinet locks, mortice locks or any combination of these locks.

All master key systems are patented for a maximum period of up to 20 years before the patent and the key restriction runs out thus allowing the system to be legally copied. The longer the patent on a key or lock design the better, as you maintain control over the security of your premises.

Whether your need is a single security lock for your own front door, or a large establishment or company with multiple sites Timpson Locksmiths can help.

Business

Master Keying can evolve & designs get more complex, you may be responsible for a building with departments or area’s that need grouping, entrance doors which everyone can use, or special access to certain parts by cleaners, maintenance or deliveries, so this is when different security levels & importance of the keys are paramount in the design of any system.

Timpson Locksmiths can design a system to suit your budget, this can be added to for future cylinders as long as it has been provisioned for in the initial plan

Specialist Computer Software

Timpson Locksmiths use computer based software to aid design a master key system. This reduces the risks of problems such as with cross keying or ghost keys. The system automatically builds in any element for extra capacity, so you can add additional cylinders in the future if required.

Site Visits

Timpson Locksmiths would need to carry out a site visit in order to produce a master keying chart which is plotted on something similar to a graph/matrix. This is where we list all the doors, the types of lock and who needs access.

This needs to be approved by the customer before work commences as changes to this after this point may not be possible.

Things to look out for when ordering

  • Types, finishes & sizes of lock bodies and cylinders
  • Keys are not always included with cost of cylinder
  • Prices vary according to how locks are keyed KD, KA, & MK & their security levels, such as open section, restricted, along with their master keying capability.
  • Keys are always cheaper at time of order
  • Master keys are sometimes more expensive than differ keys depending on manufacturer.

Security Locks – where to get the keys cut?

By looking at markings stamped on the key or lock could help us determine who the original supplier was (or if indeed it is still restricted). Then you could either go direct or supply us with a letter of authority from an authorised signatory so we could order replacement locks on your behalf as they may already be a contact or supplier of ours.

Master Key Terminology Explained

Keyed to Differ – KD when a lock is individually keyed, it can only be opened by its own key & no other, just like your own front lock.

Keyed Alike – KA this allows for a number of locks to be operated by the same key. Good examples being when someone wants their front & back doors working from the same key. Often on shops where they use several padlocks on shutters, the shutters themselves or cabinets, it is convenient to have the same key… it goes on & on…

Master-keyed – MK involves each lock having its own individual key which will not operate any other lock in a building or buildings, but where all locks can be operated by a single key, usually held by a owner, a warden, someone in security, a nominated key holder for the premises… this key is the MASTER KEY.

Think of your family tree – Genealogy, the principal is very much the same
